Connecting Families

During long absences from their parents, children usually experience emotional separation and turmoil. Studies show that children experience “high rates of mental health symptoms, adjustment difficulties, and stress associated with the deployment cycle, psychological distress, behavioral problems, and family discord.” Our goal is to connect children with their father, supporting their relationship and minimizing these emotional effects.

Daddy Read a Book’s service intends to reduce emotional stress on children during long absences from their parents, and promote the benefits of reading.

Reading aloud helps children discover words and languages, develop their imagination, learn colors and shapes, succeed in school, exercise logic, and cope with new situations.

In the early 1960’s two researchers, Todd Risley and Betty Hart, studied the effects of parents talking to their child during the first years of their life. They found that the more parents talked to their children, the faster the children’s vocabularies grew and the higher their IQ test scores later in life.

The level of reading experience had a positive correlation with children’s rate of vocabulary growth and use at age three. There was a continued positive correlation with general accomplishments and school performance at age nine.

In his bestseller The Read-Aloud Handbook, author Jim Trelease stated, “Students who read the most, read the best, achieve the most, and stay in school the longest. Conversely, those who don’t read much, cannot get better at it.”

According to a landmark report released in 1985, “Becoming a Nation of Readers”, reading aloud is “the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading.”
